The Myah OS project has branched out into several new flavors. Today the first release of Myah OS Box Edition is available. The Box Edition is aimed at people who want full powered Linux system built around a super light weight Desktop. This first Box edition I consider to be unstable since there are at least 3 bugs still present.
Myah OS Box Edition runs a Desktop made up of 3 parts. Openbox is the windows manager. Pcmanfm is the file manager that also handles desktop wallpaper and icons. Fbpanel handles the menu, panel and systray. These 3 applications combine to give a well rounded desktop with a very low resource footprint.
Unlike other distros that run a similarly light desktops this is not meant to be a tiny distro. Instead it has full multimedia support for play back and editing. It has flash and java support. It has a wide range of applications to handle all your daily needs. For those who want a light desktop that not light on usability.
The Myah Package Management and System tools has also been updated. There is a new Myah System Settings application for system administration. It will let you change font size, hostname, default desktop, Timezone, package settings and user admin. The Myah Live Installer will let you install the LiveCD fully to a hard drive or created a LiveUSB. It will also let you install any of the Myah OS flavors over the Internet using the latest packages off the server.
There are 3 bugs still in the system. Some applications will not launch using the GTK2 them. They default back to the ugly GTK1. This is seen when running a program as a different user. Fbpanel doesn't seem to respect Terminal=true in .desktop files. This means if a program needs to be launched with the terminal they wont. You need to run mya-live-installer, mya-manager and htop all from a terminal because of this. There is also a typo in one of the shutdown rc scripts. During shut down this typo will cause a it to stop. To get past this press Ctrl + Alt + F7 and then hit enter. These bugs will all be taken care of ASAP.
